Kelly's Korner

I am married with one child. I have been a resident of New Berlin for 8 years. I enjoy the New Berlin community and I am proud to be a part of it. I love arts and crafts, painting, beading, coupon clipping, cooking and writing.

Since my early teens I have fantasized of becoming a writer.  At times, while the other kids were off enjoying the summer fun, I was hunched over on my front porch, with my pencil, notebook, and a pondering expression on my face. I wrote poems and stories and always kept a journal of some sort. Writing was a form of therapy–a release of misplaced teenage energy, if you will.

Much the same as the general population in high school, grades in general, turned me off. I was pretty good in reading and writing classes, but add a letter grade to my work and all creativity spiraled down the drain for me. The fact that I haven’t read as many books as I should have, or would have liked to, I leaned towards giving up. I thought I was doomed; if I am not a heavy reader, how can I be a writer? But the thing is I love to write. One emotion or deep, meaningful, moment can inspire me to write for weeks. Although I enjoy painting, beading, crocheting, or just about any craft–I have come to learn that writing is my passion.

Over the years, like a college student home for dinner, I always return to some form of writing. I’ve written eulogies, remembrances and I’ve even taken a writing class or two. And of course, I recently became a blogger. Apparently I have not given up, and my future is moving in the right direction, but I still dream of doing something more with my words.

As I shared my enthusiasm with friends and researched the internet, I discovered AllWriters Workplace and Workshop in Waukesha. I decided to sign up and give it a try, and I think I finally found “the heat to my flame.” All genres and writing abilities are welcome; whether you are writing non-fiction, fiction, poetry or short stories. For those who are more defined in their writing path, AllWriters offers assistance in coaching, editing and marketing. If you just want to write and do not yet know what your intentions are, AllWriters is there to guide and encourage you along your journey.

The founder and owner of AllWriters, Kathie Giorgio, and her husband Michael run this, wonderful, quaint Workshop. Kathie’s passion for writing is liberally displayed throughout every corner of the workshop. The broad display of books, typewriters, art work and clocks is impressive in such a modest space; yet lively and conversational.

The instructor of Monday night classes, Michael Giorgio is commendable. He is talented, pleasant to work with and really knows his “stuff.” The atmosphere provides a laid-back, enjoyable environment, which consists of a diverse group of writers. No matter how you look at it, all are there for one purpose–to write!

The cost of this 6 week class is extremely reasonable and well worth the amount of feedback and encouragement provided by the instructors. AllWriters hosts a variety of classes throughout the week, celebrity Saturdays, annual retreats and much more. I originally joined AllWriters to focus on my poetry and just learn in general. To my surprise, I am currently working on a short story, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. Who knows, with the guidance of the staff at AllWriters, maybe one of my stories or poems will be published someday. Okay, I am allowed to keep dreaming correct? For the time being, I am learning, writing and enjoying it. Finally, I have come to realize that If only one person is touched by my words, even if it is just me, that is an A+, and all the encouragement that I need.

Check it out and see for yourself–maybe I’ll see you there?
