10 municipalities plus MMSD report sewer overflows

By Don Behm of the Journal Sentinel

July 23, 2010 4:18 p.m. | Ten municipalities in Milwaukee, Waukesha and Ozaukee counties, in addition to the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, have reported separate sanitary sewer overflows of untreated wastewater to local waterways after Thursday's intense rains, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

The Milwaukee County communities reporting overflows Thursday include Brown Deer, Fox Point, Milwaukee, Shorewood and Whitefish Bay. Mequon was the only community in Ozaukee County to report an overflow as of Friday.

Waukesha County communities with overflow problems Thursday include Menomonee Falls, Muskego, Brookfield and the Lake Pewaukee Sanitary District, the DNR said in a water systems report Friday.

The metropolitan sewerage district's deep tunnels remained nearly full Friday afternoon so any of the district's regional sanitary sewers with high flows were continuing to spill untreated wastewater into local creeks, rivers and Lake Michigan for a second consecutive evening, district officials said. Combined sanitary and storm sewers in central Milwaukee and eastern Shorewood also were continuing to spill some of their volume as flows remained high Friday.

The mix of sewage and wastewater in the tunnels was being pumped out as quickly as possible and the district's two sewage treatment plants were operating at capacity Friday afternoon, MMSD Executive Director Kevin Shafer said Friday.

Residents block shopping center access

By Jane Ford

July 20, 2010 4:58 p.m. | It is a little harder to get into the shopping center at Janesville Road and Racine Avenue these days. The access road off of Janesville has been blocked to the commercial area since at least Friday afternoon.

Drivers headed for Piggly Wiggly, the McDonald's Restaurant, Kwik Trip, Cousins Subs and other businesses have been doing U-turns on the barricaded access road since then.

Residents of the condominiums behind Piggly Wiggly put the barricades up. They claim that the road is theirs, it needs repair and the businesses whose customers use the road should help pay. This issue has apparently been simmering for some time.

The barricaded road is the only direct access from Janesville Road for eastbound drivers.

The mayor and alderman in the area were alerted to the situation Friday and are working on it.

GM reinstates E.J. Salentine Buick franchise in Muskego

By Joe Taschler of the Journal Sentinel

July 16, 2010 11:32 a.m. | General Motors has reinstated the franchise of E.J. Salentine Buick in Muskego, the third-generation family owners of the dealership said Friday.

The dealership this week placed its first orders for new cars, and they should be arriving at the end of August or in early September, said Sue Sorensen, general manager and one of the family owners.

Longtime customers have already placed orders for new vehicles, she said.

The dealership, at 14444 W. Janesville Road, had received vocal support from Muskego residents since first being told about a year ago that GM was dropping its franchise.

Some longtime customers wrote directly to GM executives and also contacted members of Congress urging reinstatement of the dealership. The dealership held a rally in September to urge GM to reinstate its new car franchise.

Mayor says plans for lake park are dead

By JANE FORD-STEWART

July 16, 2010 10:46 a.m. | The proposed Bring Back the Lake park project that had been planned for Little Muskego Lake is dead, Mayor John Johnson said today.

Michael Dillworth, owner of three parcels that were to become part of a proposed park has decided not to sell his land. He did not say why, Johnson said.

The owner of the other two properties that were to have been a major part of the plan announced he would not sell during an informational meeting where the plan was strongly and nearly unanimously criticized.

City officials had already decided against acquiring two additional very expensive lake properties for the project. The owners were willing to sell.

Johnson said of the Dillworth property withdrawal: "That effectively kills the Bring Back the Lake proposal."
