Paul Farrow elected Waukesha County exec; Van De Water out as judge

April 07, 2015 10:28 p.m. | Waukesha County voters on Tuesday hired state Sen. Paul Farrow of Pewaukee for the job of county chief executive officer.

And voters Tuesday fired two-term incumbent Circuit Judge Linda Van De Water from her Branch 10 seat.

The race to replace County Executive Dan Vrakas ended with a lopsided victory for Farrow as he outpolled County Supervisor Thomas Schellinger with nearly 68% of votes in Tuesday's spring election, according to preliminary results with 98% of units reporting.

Vrakas did not seek re-election to a four-year term and endorsed Farrow for the job.

In his unsuccessful bid for the office, Schellinger had been critical of Farrow's decision to run for county executive less than two weeks after his November re-election to the Senate's 33rd District.

Waukesha man charged after chase, crash into animal hospital

April 07, 2015 7:23 p.m. | A man who crashed a vehicle into the New Berlin Animal Hospital following a high-speed chase on I-94 early Tuesday was charged with drunken driving and eluding a law enforcement officer, according to the Waukesha County Sheriff's Office.

Aaron Robert Gullickson, 27, of Waukesha was also charged with operating a vehicle without the owner's consent, according to a news relase from the sheriff's office.

Business as usual, despite vehicle slamming into animal hospital

April 07, 2015 4:28 p.m. | Even though a fleeing car slammed into their building early this morning, operations at the New Berlin Animal Hospital have been amazingly normal, said Amy Eirschele, practice manager, late Tuesday.

Television crews have arrived all day, but clients come and go as normal, she said.

No pets were in the building between 2:45 and 3 a.m. when the crash occurred, she said. New Berlin police captured the driver who had fled after the crash. He was arrested for drunken driving and for driving a vehicle without the owner's consent.

A Waukesha County Sheriff's deputy had spotted the vehicle weaving on the on-ramp to eastbound Interstate 94 at Grandview Boulevard in Waukesha.

The deputy followed and clocked the vehicle at 90 mph before trying to pull it over. The vehicle accelerated and exited onto southbound Moorland Road. It blew through several traffic signals and was all over the road, according to a press release from the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department.

Incumbent judge faces challenge from young lawyer in Waukesha County

March 31, 2015 3:13 p.m. | In Waukesha County, a young lawyer hopes to upset a 12-year incumbent Tuesday for a seat on the circuit court.

Paul Bugenhagen Jr., 34, expects character issues will shorten his long odds to unseat Linda Van De Water.

"It's the number one thing people approached me about, her public conduct" Bugenhagen said in an interview.

"Most voters are looking for people to simply follow the law, be good role models, promote personal responsibility and show good character," he said.

In 2011, Van De Water, 52, was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct in Racine County after authorities said she confronted an ex-boyfriend outside the home of another woman and kicked and jumped on his car. The next day, according to the complaint, Van De Water confronted the couple at a Brookfield restaurant.

New Berlin planners to hold month of input sessions about future of remainiing rural sections

March 26, 2015 10:57 a.m. | New Berlin — A month of public input and questions will be taken on what New Berlin planners say will be the final determination of how the largest tract of farmland left in the city east of Moorland Road should be developed.

Known as section 35, it is bounded roughly by Grange and College avenues, Moorland and Sunny Slope roads in the southern part of the city. The planning area input will include what is known as section 34.

After months of speaking with residents and neighbors, planners have changed the section 35 plan in three ways.

One is that a sports complex of athletic fields, playgrounds and park area is proposed along part of Sunny Slope Road. Another is increasing the proposed density to two homes per acre from the original one home for every two acres.

Neighbors have said they would not mind the increase, said Greg Kessler, community development director. He noted that the proposed higher density is still less than the housing density across Sunny Slope Road.
