Fish fries start new year at Holy Apostles

New Berlin - The first Holy Apostles fish fry of the year will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Jan. 13 in the gym at 159th Street and National Ave.

The cost (dine in or take out) is for $9.50 for adults, $8.50 for seniors, $4.75 for children ages 5 to 12 and $2.50 for children 4 and younger. Also, a fish-and-shrimp combo is available for $10.50.

All meals include baked or breaded cod, parsley potatoes or french fries, coleslaw, applesauce, rye bread, homemade dessert, milk and coffee. (Beer and soda are extra.)

More fish fries are slated for Feb. 10, March 9 and 23. and April 6.

Muskego Elementary to hold food drive

Muskego - Muskego Elementary School will hold a food drive for the Muskego food pantry.

Students will bring their donations to school between Jan. 13 and 20. The drive is sponsored by the Muskego Elementary Scouts, students and families.

Seminar on changes to aid aging in place

Muskego - Kitchens and Bathrooms by Callen, Muskego, will hold a free panel discussion on how to make homes safer and easier to live in as people age.

The discussion will be at the company's showroom, W13131 Janesville Road., on Jan. 18.

Archeologist to 'bring' Cleopatra to library

Muskego - Archaeologist Carter Lupton of the Milwaukee Public Museum will give a presentation titled "Cleopatra, Her Life and Legend" at 1 p.m. Jan. 21, at the Muskego Library, W16663 Janesville Road.

Cleopatra VII, the elusive queen, continues to capture the enduring interest of people the world over. Yet many aspects of the life of this powerful woman, the last of Egypt's great pharaohs, remain mysteries. Lupton will discuss those mysteries in his presentation.

The program, made possible by Friends of Muskego Public Library, is free to the public, although a donation of a non-perishable food item for the Muskego food pantry would be welcomed.

The Milwaukee Public Museum currently features the exhibit "Cleopatra: The Search for the Last Queen of Egypt."

Free workshop on permanent weight loss

New Berlin - The Foundation for Wellness Professionals will hold a free workshop, "Five Secrets to Permanent Weight Loss," at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Princeton Club, 14999 W. Beloit Road.

The presentation will cover why diets don't work, why eating fat doesn't make you fat, what hormone is out of control in your body, how to reduce the chance of breast cancer, how to regain energy and vitality, and exercise programs.

Murder on the menu at mystery dinner, auction

New Berlin - As if reading the crime news isn't chilling enough, the Rotary Club of New Berlin will present its sixth annual murder mystery dinner and silent auction, "Till Death Do Us Part."

The event will be at 5 p.m. Jan. 28 at the New Berlin Entertainment Center, 16000 W. Cleveland Ave. A buffet dinner, following the wedding theme, will be served at 6:15 p.m.

Then, at 7 p.m., one of the characters is murdered, and it will be up to the guests to solve the crime by interviewing the suspects (played by some Rotarians and friends) as they visit each table.

The cost is $40 per person. Tickets are available through members or by calling Audrey Juds, (262) 786-5267. Proceeds from the event will support the New Berlin food pantry, the New Berlin Fire Department and the New Berlin Library. Rotarians also promote youth exchange programs, world polio eradication and clean water wells in Central America.

Muskego library offers various school year programs

Muskego - The Muskego Public Library has new stuff and variations on the old standby, book groups and reading programs, beginning this fall and some lasting throughout the school year.

Information and registration for the following programs can be obtained at the library, W16663 Janesville Road, or by calling the reference desk at (262) 971-2101.

New this fall is Story Art, at 10 a.m. Thursdays. Each session will include stories and an art project. Registration is required.

The library also offers No School Today! Programs, ideas for what to do when Muskego schools are not in session.

Steampunk Book Group - focused on the genres of fantasy, science fiction and new steampunk - is for students in grades 8 to 12. The meetings, from 7 to 8 p.m., is the first Tuesdays of the month through May. This high school group has been popular for 19 years.

Ravenous Readers is back for its 21st year, for students in, entering or completing grades 6 to 8. The group meets from 7 to 8 p.m. on the second Tuesdays of the month October to May.

Books for Steampunk and Ravenous Readers have been purchased by the Friends of the Library. Registration is limited for both groups.

Story time, youth group signups at library

Muskego - Story time signups have begun at the Muskego Public Library, W16663 Janesville Road.

Lap-sitters Story Time, for children ages 2 and 3 with an adult, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesdays. Preschool Pals for children ages 4 to 6 will be at 1 p.m. Wednesdays.

Dementia caregivers support group to start

New Berlin - A new caregiver support group sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month at the New Berlin Public Library, 15105 Library Lane.

A group will provide an open forum for caregivers or family members to voice concerns and ask questions about Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia.

In addition to the emotional, educational and social support provided, the meetings also will allow participants to develop problem-solving skills.

The support group also is open to all family members and there is no cost to attend.
