New Berlin considers stronger measures to integrate housing

Due to federal Department of Justice pressure, the New Berlin Common Council reached a consensus to take stronger measures to promote integrated housing in the city.
The council will take formal action when two aldermen who could not attend Tuesday's meeting return. The measures are being considered to keep intact the city's settlement of a discrimination lawsuit the DOJ brought against the city for its attempts to block workforce multifamily housing in the New Berlin City Center.
Instead of exploring reaching out to organizations such as the Milwaukee Fair Housing Council, the Waukesha Housing Authority and Habitat for Humanity, the city would definitely contact the groups.
It also would more actively seek grants for a fund the settlement required the city to set up to promote integrated housing.
