Country Meadows Elementary School Principal Gary Goelz promoted to assistant superintendent of the M

July 3, 2014

Muskego — Country Meadows Elementary School Principal Gary Goelz has been promoted to assistant superintendent of the Muskego-Norway School District.

He succeeds Michelle Schwab who resigned in June to become superintendent of the Spooner Area School District.

Goelz was among more than 40 candidates who applied for the vacancy.

But many attributes set him apart from the other candidates, Superintendent Kelly Thompson said in an email interview.

"His commitment to continuous improvement and focus on student-data and growth in achievement" are all strengths he will bring to the position, she said.

As assistant superintendent, Goelz's responsibilities are attracting, developing and retaining high-impact teachers and integrating educator and principal effectiveness models into the system. And for that he is well-qualified, Thompson said.

Goelz has already developed and supports a highly-effective staff at Country Meadows, she said.

"He is a proven leader who achieves results, as evidenced by his most recent national recognition of Country Meadows being a Blue Ribbon School in fall 2013," Thompson said.

"We are incredibly excited about the opportunity to have Gary Goelz in a position of larger impact," she said. "He is a man of great integrity, focus and commitment."

"I'm very honored," Goelz said after the school board approved his appointment.

He has been Country Meadows principal for eight years and he called those "the best eight years."

But he is excited about his new responsibilities, he said.

"I'm looking forward to attracting the highest quality educators and working with the board," he said. He is committed to helping the schools continuously improve, he said.

School officials are already finding a new principal for Country Meadows. A second round of panel interviews was to happen this week. .

A recommendation for a new principal may come as early as the board's Monday, July 14, meeting, Thompson said.

As one of two assistant superintendents, Goelz will help oversee an administration that has undergone numerous reshuffles in recent years. The number of district administrators has not changed but the titles have.

As late as 2011, the district had a director of student learning and a curriculum coordinator, both administrative positions. Then the district went to a director of school performance with a director of student learning.

Now those two posts are gone and replaced by a director of secondary student learning who is Lisa Safago and a director of elementary student learning who is Dawn Marisch. The former director of pupil services is now director of student services and assessment and is Ted Gennerman. Similarly, the director of business services is now assistant superintendent for business, operations and human resources and is Julie Kelly.

The district also has a director of special education who is Kaari Olson, chief information officer Tony Spence who oversees the computer area, and Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds Jeremiah Johnson.
