New school calendar approved despite some concerns
A school calendar that has school starting on Sept. 1 was approved Monday night by the Muskego-Norway School Board, despite the concerns from one board member who asked for a calendar that was more "user friendly" for parents.
Mike Serdynski said it would help to parents' work schedules if early-release days for students were all at the end of the week.
In addition, he said, having breaks in school close together makes life harder for working parents. For example, he pointed to Feb. 11, when children will be released early on a Thursday, will return to school on Friday and be off the following Monday.
School Board member Dean Strom said he shared Serdynski's concerns. But he said the upcoming school calendar is better than in the past in those regards.
Superintendent Joe Schroeder said the concerns will be kept in mind when the next calendar is negotiated with teachers.
The reason early-release days are interspersed during the week rather than always being on a Friday is so that students do not keep missing the same subjects, he Schroeder said.
