Construction begins on new Walmart superstore
Mayor hopes site spurs development
Muskego — Groundbreaking ceremonies were held last week officially marking the start of construction for a 156,400-square-foot Walmart store on the southeast corner of Moorland Road and College Avenue.
The new store will be what used to be called a superstore because it will include a grocery store offering dairy products, meat, produce and non-perishable foods.
The department store part of the new Walmart will have sporting goods, electronic equipment, lawn and garden products, apparel and general merchandise. Other store amenities will include a pharmacy, optical and photo departments.
Muskego Mayor John Johnson welcomed the new store.
"That's the anchor for the east side of Muskego in the business center," he said. "We think it will spur other development, which is what we want."
Madison-based Corporate Construction was named general contractor for the store's construction. Site preparation and other preliminary steps were under way following the groundbreaking. The store is scheduled to open in fall 2010.
The store will create about 320 associate jobs. Based on Wisconsin averages, approximately 60 percent of those positions will be full-time with benefits. At present, the average hourly pay for regular full-time associates in Wisconsin is $11.73, according to Wal-Mart officials.
