New Christian school to open

Founder looking for Waukesha location

A new Christian school for Milwaukee's western suburbs is slated to begin holding classes this fall, though some details - including the school's location - are still to be determined.

School founder and board member Clint Holden said the school most likely will be located in Waukesha, near Interstate 94.

"(That) the school will be located in Waukesha County is all we know just yet," Holden wrote in an e-mail. "The goal is to be located west of Barker (road), and (the school) would likely then have a Waukesha address."

Holden said school officials are searching for faculty in the Waukesha and Brookfield areas.

To help in the planning process, Horizon Christian High School will hold an informational meeting for interested parents from 7 to 8:15 p.m. March 1 at West Suburban Christian Academy, 1721 Northview Road, Waukesha.

The meeting is intended to inform parents of progress, gauge interest, discuss intentions, recruit volunteer help and begin taking registrations. More meetings may be held in the future.

In a recent news release, school officials described Horizon's curriculum as rigorous but "smart and simple." It will feature liberal arts traditions focused on critical thinking, logical and creative problem solving, persuasive communication and the enhancement of character, and be rooted in a Biblical framework.

School leaders believe the school can begin in fall 2010, depending on interest levels. Long-range plans include developing a campus in Milwaukee's western suburbs with a capacity for 250 to 350 students.

Horizon is not affiliated with any specific church or other Christian school, though students will be expected to live according to the school's "moral standard of excellence based on Biblical principles."
