Higher than expected state transportation aid drops New Berlin's 2013 potential property tax levy for municipal purposes from 2.69 percent to 2.13 percent.
The New Berlin Common Council met Tuesday to continue its review of the proposed 2013 spending plan in hopes of approving a preliminary budget on Oct. 9 to go to a public hearing. While two aldermen expressed opposition to the size of the tax levy before Tuesday's meeting, they didn't push for changes. Tuesday's review was mainly aimed at fact-gathering for potential proposals on Oct. 9 to raise revenues and increase efficiencies.
The council's review left the total all funds budget at 1.14 percent higher than the 2012 spending plan. The potential property tax rate of $5.58 per $1,000 of assessed value is far higher than the $5.01 per $1,000 from 2012 because the city revalued all property this year, so rates are not comparable.
