Gun law's difficult target

Training classes are hard to find right now

Oct. 24, 2011 | 8 comments

While Wisconsin's concealed carry law goes into effect Nov. 1, a place where people can get the required training could be problematic.

Muskego and New Berlin residents are pretty much on their own to find classes that will satisfy the new law's training requirement. Both police departments said they don't offer classes. While state Department of Natural Resources hunter safety classes will satisfy the law's minimum training requirements, both the New Berlin and Muskego recreation departments have finished their hunter safety classes for the year.

Muskego officials don't know if a hunter safety class can be offered in 2012 because a new instructor must be found. For now, they are directing inquiries to the DNR website to locate the nearest hunter safety classes. Go to http://dnr.wi.gov/org/es/enforcement/safety/hunted.htm and click on "upcoming courses."

New Berlin will offer hunter safety again, probably in February or March, and the department also is developing a concealed carry class for next year.

While neither community has a gun shop or outdoor sports stores that might offer classes, traveling concealed training courses have and will come to hotels in New Berlin.

Key training component

Proof of acceptable training is needed to obtain a license to carry a concealed weapon.

Although hunter safety courses are good enough to satisfy the law's license requirement, New Berlin Police Chief Joe Reider said they fall far short of protecting the owner of a firearm from financial ruin if they use the gun improperly.

Civil, if not criminal, proceedings follow a shooting, Reider said.

Reider strongly advocates a class that covers more than just firing mechanics. People need to know when they are justified to use deadly force, he said, which means the teachers need to know the law specific to Wisconsin.

Beyond that, the new concealed carry law is specific about the kind of instructor required. See the Department of Justice home page, www.doj.state.wi.us/dles/cib/ConcealedCarry/ConcealedCarry.asp.

Endorsing WCTC's class

Reider said the best class he knows of that teaches both gun handling and the legal aspects is at WCTC.

Classes there will resume Jan. 14 at the Pewaukee campus, 800 Main St. The six-hour course costs $85. Many sessions are scheduled and registrations are being accepted online at wctc.edu/cjtraining and click on "concealed carry for civilians." More information is available at 262-691-5070.

AT A GLANCE

Training required to get a concealed carry license can be any of the following:

The hunter education program established by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) or a substantially similar program that is established by another state, country, or province and that is recognized by DNR.

A firearms safety or training course that is conducted by a national or state organization that certifies firearms instructors.

A firearms safety or training course offered by a law enforcement agency

A firearms safety or training course taught by an instructor who is certified by a national or state organization that certifies firearms instructors or by an instructor certified by the Wisconsin Department of Justice and offered by a technical college, a college or university, a private or public institution or organization, or a firearms training school.

A firearms safety or training course that is offered to law enforcement officers or to owners and employees of licensed private detective and security agencies.

A firearms safety or training course conducted by a firearms instructor who is certified by a national or state organization that certifies firearms instructors or who is certified by the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

Documentation of having completed military, law enforcement or security training that gave experience with firearms that is substantially equivalent to a course or program of the kind described.

An online course will not fulfill the training requirement.

  1. If you have questions about the CWP law or training contact www.e2c.us or 1-866-371-6111 and the Instructors at Equip 2 Conceal will be happy to help you.
  2. Jane, I know you're not a real big time reporter, but seriously? "Muskego and New Berlin residents are pretty much on their own to find classes that will satisfy the new law's training requirement."

Who in the state of Wisconsin is NOT "pretty much on their own" to find training? Are you saying that government entities should be responsible for providing training? Are you saying that Muskego and New Berlin residents don't have the ability to find such classes?

Is there a reason that people cannot do a Google search for firearm training in Southeast Wisconsin? There's many out there. How about contacting the NRA, Wisconsin Carry, Inc., or another legitimate organization? How about calling Cabella's, Gander Mountain, or a gun shop?

In the last six months, firearm trainers have been coming out of the woodwork! Jane, the last thing you could say about finding training in order to obtain a CCW permit is that it is "problematic".
  3. This is the best that the Now can do to report on and inform the residents of New Berlin? No wonder they can't sell the paper and have to give it away. No actual news.
They do a major piece on the Fall Harvest Parade at Glen Park school being cancelled but are not at all interested in what ever happened with the story they helped create...the burglaries and vandalism at the Chiovatero's home that he insinuated was committed by the residents of New Berlin who he claims are bigots and racists.
"Now" does not report on why Chiovatero and his daughter invited her drug addicted boyfriend to stay at Chiovatero's house or why he allowed it. "Now" does not investigate why his absentee wife, who lives in Appleton rather than with her husband, thinks about why Chiovatero would let his own daughter invite a drug addict to stay at their home. Would Chiovatero's first wife have allowed this? "Now" does not report on how long he has been living their. "Now" does not investigate and report on his daughters live-in drug addicted boyfriends involvement in the previous thefts and vandalism (not to mention the accusation by Chiovatero of the attempted murder of the family dog) at Chiovatero's house. "Now" does not investigate if the accusations by Chiovatero that the burglaries, vandalism and attempt on his dog's life were committed by Chiovatero's daughters drug addicted live-in boyfriend and ask Chiovatero if he will apologize to the residents of New Berlin for his false accusations. "Now" did not investigate or report on what ever happened to the 9mm hand gun missing from Chiovatero's night stand. "Now" did not investigate or report if that gun was traded for drugs and ended up in the hands of a drug dealer or a gang. Was Chiovatero's daughter involved? Does the boyfriend still live with Chiovatero's daughter in his own house?
Oh yes, I forgot, the "Now" brought in a special reporter from Racine to do a front page article on Bill-Tax-Them-Moore's new candidate for mayor inclu
  4. Oh yes, I forgot, the "Now" brought in a special reporter from Racine to do a front page article on Bill-Tax-Them-Moore's new candidate for mayor including a front page creepy picture of Tax-Them Moore with his hands elbow deep in his pockets. According to the "Now" article his main qualifications for mayor seem to be that he organized a flower swap in his subdivision. WOW what a story!
  5. Taxed; I agree 100%.
Reading your post made me think, what about our common council president (who wants to be mayor) and all his dirt? Like his foreclosure and legal problems with his business, and was it Ament with the tax delinquency problems? I thought it was Ament. When a person find's out about things like this they may be inclined to wonder; if they handle personal business this way, is this how they handle New Berlin?
Just throwing that out for thought.
Did Now cover those stories in depth? Not sure.
  6. Hooked. I do remember hearing about some allegations from that radical socialist Now bloger that censors responses so that she doesn't have to defend her accusations and from his opponents during their campaigns against him. He still lives in the same house, so obviously these were rumors and innuendos/lies made for political reasons created to discredit him in order to win an election. I also remember reading about Ament's "delinquent taxes" from his opponents campaigns and that same liberal blog. And if I remember correctly from campaign fliers from TBOC and Who-Cares about New Berlin. I checked with the City and it actually was a Utility bill that arrived several days late. I'm surprised that wasn't on the front page with a picture of Bill Tax-Them-Moore with his hands elbow deep in his pockets. Maybe that was actually a story because he usually has his hands elbow deep in everyone else's pockets.
    Continued...
  7. While I understand why a late Utility bill payment is not the front page news liberals keep trying to make an issue out of, it's intriguing there has been no follow up reporting about the burglaries, thefts and vandalisms at mayor Chiovatero's house by his daughters live-in drug addict boyfriend especially because mayor Chiovatero accused the residents of his own city of being bigoted racists and insinuating that they were responsible for these crimes simply because they disagreed with him. This should be front page news because it's directly connected to his job as the mayor of the city. No reporting about Chiovatero's false allegations or even an apology. I'm glad you agree with me 100%!
  8. Or the NOW could do a "Where are They NOW?" piece about the "nutjob" who ran against Harenda last spring? Rumor has it he actually went door to door packing heat? Then stalked Harenda everywhere he went including taking pictures of his home.
