Muskego - If you like a lot of music and dancing, then "Thoroughly Modern Millie" is thoroughly for you, Muskego High School musical director Matt Wanner said.
The Muskego High School music department presents "Thoroughly Modern Millie," at 7 p.m. Feb. 21, 22 and 23 and at 2 p.m. Feb. 24. Performances will be in the school's Performing Arts Center, S8750 Racine Ave.
"It's a very big dance show," Wanner said. Since the end of November, English teacher and choreographer Patricia Barcus has been turning young people who never even touched a tap dance shoe into real dancers for the two big tap numbers, Wanner said.
"Mille," a classic musical comedy favorite was chosen for several reasons, he said.
"The show is interesting and has a humorous story line and the music is of the highest quality," Wanner said.
The story focuses on a small-town girl, Millie, who goes to New York City with big dreams. The world is opening up in 1922 when the story is set, with women experiencing social liberation.
And Millie wants to be modern. But she finds her definition of modern is challenged.
"Millie" opened on Broadway in 2002 and won six Tony Awards including Best Musical.
A movie was made starring Julie Andrews, but that is a totally different show, Wanner said.
Appearing as Millie will be Ashley Patin. Also appearing in major roles will be Maria Kastello as Mrs. Meers; Eric Pillar as Mr. Trevor Graydon; Kelsee York as Muzzy Van Hossmere; Matt Welden as Jimmy Smith; Christina Foster as Miss Flannery; and Leah Henricksen as Miss Dorothy Brown.
Even two AFS foreign exchange students have been swept up into the show. Sumire Terai from Japan sings in the chorus and Soren Alrutz from Germany will run the lighting for the show as a member of the stage crew.
All seats are reserved and tickets are nonrefundable. Tickets are $6 ($7 at the door), general, $5 for seniors (55 and over) and children (age 12 and younger).
