Muskego girls top the pack in own invite

Boys squad claims strong second in meet

Sept. 24, 2012

Muskego - Both Muskego cross country teams made themselves right at home in their own meet on Saturday morning at Lake Denoon Middle School.

The girls won the 17-team event with 60 points, topping a talented Brookfield Central team, which tallied 67 points. The Warrior boys claimed a solid second place with 96 points, trailing only Waukesha North with 71 points.

The Muskego girls placed five runners in the top 16 in winning their title.

Lexie Tremble paced the girls squad by capturing ninth place with 15 minutes, 33 seconds, and she was followed closely by Jenna Lederman in 10th (15:37), Georgi Llanas 12th (15:39), Morgan Marek 13th (15:39) and Leanna Barr 16th (15:50).

Ellie Tadych came in 27th (16:17) and Amy Klaus 30th (16:19) to round out Muskego's competitors.

Boys head coach C.J. Michaud said his team clearly exceeded his expectations.

"Leading up to race day, I was hoping they could finish fourth and we would run at least four personal bests," Michaud said. "We finished second, all eight runners PR'd, we got our first guys under 17 minutes for the season and our top five passed 101 people in the last two miles."

Andrew Salo led the way, finishing ninth (16:52), and Mitch Kwapick joined him in topping 17 minutes, taking 11th (16:57). Zach Matusinec was 20th (17:17), Josh Deakin 26th (17:25), Alex Erickson 30th (17:31), Max Tesch 37th (17:39) and Nic Blommel 45th (17:44).

"Josh continues to climb our freshman all-time list - he now sits second, only 11 seconds away from our fastest freshman ever - and Mitch and Alex are both within five seconds of making their grade-level all-time lists."

The Muskego boys junior varsity team won its race, with Evan Seghers placing third and posting the ninth-best freshman time in school history.

Both boys and girls squads will participate in the Eagle Invitational at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Sept. 29.
