How does a coach slow down a 6-foot, 3-inch center?
How about with a pair of 6-3 centers?
That's what Sheboygan North used against Muskego's Renee Bennett in a 48-29 victory at the Brookfield Central Thanksgiving Shootout on Saturday night.
North's 6-3 sophomores Mackenzie and Madison Wolf helped hold Bennett to just six points, and the rest of the Golden Raiders' defense shut down Muskego's other options.
"They were very physical on their defense, and they really took us out of things we were trying to do offensively," head coach Brian Hirtz said. "They really caused us some problems on the offensive end. We've got a lot of things to work on offensively against physical teams like that."
The Warriors managed just eight first-half points, hitting just two shots, in falling behind 22-8. Things improved slightly in the third quarter, when Jessica Cattani and Sammy Schneiker both hit 3-point field goals to cut it to 28-20.
North, though, pulled away again and led by as many as 19 points.
Cattani totaled 11 points for Muskego, which hit just 26 percent from the floor and 7-of-22 at the free throw line.
Muskego opens Classic 8 Conference play at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4 at home against Hartland Arrowhead.
Muskego boys basketball
In a game that featured two halves that could not have been more different, the Warriors fell to Waterford, 55-50, on Tuesday night.
Muskego led 35-14 after the first half but was outscored 41-15 in the second half.
"In the first half, we took care of the ball, and our press was getting Waterford to go too fast," head coach Andy Capes said. "We took good shots, and we rebounded well."
Things changed after halftime, though.
"It was kind of a slow bleed," Capes said. "We didn't box out, and they got some second and third chances and went on an eight-point run. Our young players tightened up, and we took some quick shots; we were out of control. We also had 14 turnovers in the second half."
Turner Kehoe tallied a game-high 24 points for the Warriors (0-2), but the next-highest scorer was Mike Vidmar with five points.
"This was a tough loss," Capes said, "but we proved we could do well in spurts. We can build on that."
Muskego will next visit former Southeast Conference rival Franklin at 7:15 p.m. Friday. The Warriors will then play their first-ever Classic 8 Conference contest at Hartland Arrowhead at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4.
New Berlin boys swimming
The New Berlin Marlins have five key returning swim team members, including four state qualifiers, for new coach Becky Young, who also coached the girls this season.
Returning are senior Matthew Olenchek and juniors Jackson Wannamaker, Taylor Petrauski, Zach Solie and diver Zach Stoltenburg.
Olenchek (100 freestyle, 100 backstroke) Petrauski (100 back), Solie (50 free, 100 free) and Wannamaker (medley and 400 free relay) were all state qualifiers.
Young said a newcomer to watch is freshman Alex Weiss.
"Look for Weiss and junior Sam Nigbur to make an impact throughout the season," Young added. "Divers Stoltenburg and Sam Mantel look to improve on last season's success. I am looking forward to our first meet to see how everyone will compete.
"Our returning state qualifiers look really strong and I see a lot of potential from many of the swimmers."
New Berlin wrestling
New Berlin wrestling coach Nick Patenaude is excited about the upcoming season.
"We have a lot of new bodies in the wrestling room and want to see how we compete against other teams," he said. "We have had a great couple of weeks of practice, and it has been great to see the returning guys helping out the new wrestlers."
Wrestlers to watch are sophomores Nick Buban and Alex Rodriguez, juniors Kevin Thiessenhusen, Zac Nordstrom and Spencer Stanfield and senior TJ Stewart.
"We will be looking to finish at the top of the Woodland and send some wrestlers to State in Madison," Patenaude said.
