For the first time in team history, the Muskego Impact is headed for the Grand Championship round of the Land O' Lakes baseball playoffs.
The Impact swept past the Racine Kiwanis in two games, prevailing 6-1 on Aug. 14 at Racine and 12-4 at Horn Field on Sunday.
Those victories gave Muskego the Eastern Division playoff championship to go along with the regular-season crown.
"This was a long road," manager Rick Henneberry said. "This is our first time (in the Grand Championship playoffs) in my 21 years of coaching, and it's a good feeling."
As has been the case throughout this season, pitching was the key for the Impact against upstart Racine.
"Another (advantage) was the jelling of our players," Henneberry said. "We came together. We have great pitching depth and we have timely hitting. Also, solid defense has been preached to these kids."
The Impact has certainly benefited from the baseball program at Muskego High School, as a number of key players developed their games with the Warriors.
Muskego, which was 12-6 to win the regular-season title, will start the Grand Championship at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at Horn Field against Southwestern Division champion Burlington (16-2 in the regular season).
The Impact will then visit Pewaukee (14-4) at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 25. Pewaukee finished second in the West Division during the regular season but upset champion Sussex 4-3 on Sunday to qualify.
The other entry is perennial power Cedarburg, the North Division champion at 16-2. The Mercs have been the Grand Championship runnersup the past two seasons.
