Warriors seeking sixth trip to state in winning tradition
A strong winning tradition has been built by the Muskego girls volleyball team under head coach Karen Anderson, and it appears that will continue this season.
The Warriors will bring back a number of key players from last year's squad, which won the Classic 8 Conference and advanced to the WIAA Division 1 State Tournament, falling to Merrill in the quarterfinal round.
That was Muskego's fifth straight trip to state and Anderson's ninth in 12 seasons.
The returnees are led by senior libero/setter Michelle Fugarino, who earned first-team all-state honors and was named the team's most valuable player last season.
Also back are senior middle blocker Jordan Wachowiak, junior setter Morgan Kath, senior outside hitter Kayla Bluemel, senior middle blocker Lauren Kudronowicz and senior middle blocker Brianna Witter. All played significant roles on last season's team.
"We have a very experienced group returning, plus a nice infusion of younger kids," said Anderson. "We also have good senior leadership."
Other seniors on the roster are outside hitter Jaclynn Gostomski, setter Ginger Ingold and defensive specialist Martha Blanchard.
Muskego opened its 2013 season with a 25-18, 22-25, 20-25, 25-17, 17-15 triumph over Brookfield Central on Aug. 27.
Fugarino tallied 18 digs and three service aces, while Kath collected 49 assists, Wachowiak three blocks and freshman outside hitter Brooke Gostomski 14 kills.
The Warriors played in the Joust Tournament at Homestead High School last weekend, but the event came after press time for this issue.
Anderson said her team's main competition in the Classic 8 will be Mukwonago, Catholic Memorial and Hartland Arrowhead.
Muskego opened conference play at Waukesha South on Tuesday and will host an invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday featuring Arrowhead, Greenfield, Westosha Central and defending WIAA Division 1 champion Burlington.
