Muskego boys swimmers prevail in triangular meet

Warriors take first in total of five events

Dec. 20, 2013

Despite dealing with a format that benefited its opponent, the Muskego boys swimming team still won a triangular meet with Greenfield/Greendale and Whitnall on Dec. 18.

The Warriors won five events and tallied 139 points to beat the Panther-Hawks with 107 points and the Falcons with 76.

"This was a unique meet setup that is not used too often, a triangular meet scored for three teams, with each team limited to two entries per event," Muskego head coach Larry Milton said. "This played well into Greenfield's hands because it took away our depth."

Greenfield/Greendale has some strong individuals, Milton continued, and used them to keep the meet close. The Panther-Hawks, though, were hurt when their medley relay team was disqualified in the first event.

Winning individual events were Joe Szczupakiewicz in the 200 freestyle with 1 minute, 46.69 seconds and the 500 freestyle with 4:41.84 and Jon Roberts in the 50 freestyle with 22.04 seconds.

Also winning were the 200 freestyle relay team of Matt Gilson, Drew Borland, Tyler Schrank and Clayton Cesarz with 1:40.88 and the 200 medley unit of Joe Paquette, Thomas Stigler, Szczupakiewicz and Roberts at 1:49.6.

Milton also praised Cadien Ryg and Ivan Couch for their efforts.

"We swam only well enough to come out with a win, but winning should not be our first concern," Milton said. "We should be working to prepare for January and the beginning of the championship part of the season."

Muskego competes in a meet at Homestead at 10 a.m. Dec. 27.
