Area players make grade
New Berlin Eisenhower alumni Mike Hojnacki and Stephanie Schell are both enjoying success with their college basketball teams this season.
Hojnacki is a freshman forward with Michigan Tech University in Houghton, Mich., and Schell is a sophomore guard at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Hojnacki, who helped the Lions win the WIAA Division 2 state championship last season, was averaging 8 points and 3.2 rebounds for the Huskies through Feb. 15.
He had his high scoring game on Feb. 14 against Grand Valley State, tallying 19 points to lead his team.
In his senior year at Eisenhower, Hojnacki developed into a fine long-distance shooter, and he is continuing that trend at Michigan Tech, leading the squad in 3-point percentage (.426) and standing second in 3-pointers made (20).
Schell put together her best college game Jan. 17 against Detroit, scoring a career-high 11 points. She hit three of seven from 3-point range, helping the Panthers set a school single-game record with 15 3-pointers.
While playing 19 minutes, she also had two rebounds, one assist, one block and two steals in that game, which the Panthers won, 75-57.
Schell, also a team captain for the Panthers, had hit six of 14 from 3-point range this season.
