Sports Wrapups: June 25
Mike Schramek can finally cross "beat Marquette" off his list of things to do as coach of the Muskego Warriors baseball team. The Warriors defeated the visiting Hilltoppers, 12-0, on June 16, Schramek's first victory over defending state champion Marquette in his eight years with Muskego.
"It was kind of special," Schramek said. "I had never done that before. To do it that way was pretty cool."
That way was by scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning and coasting to the five-inning victory. Fourteen Warriors reached base consecutively in the big inning, which included seven hits.
"I don't know if that's something that we'll see again," Schramek said.
Adam Schultz, one of just two sophomores on the Warriors' roster, struck out seven and allowed three hits to pick up the win in his first conference start of the season. He had been limited because of arm soreness.
TJ Anderson and Matt Petritis had three hits each for the Warriors. Petritis, who also scored three times, had two doubles; the rest of Muskego's 10 hits were singles. Nick McCormack scored twice, drove in a pair and stole two bases.
Muskego's other sophomore, Cole Borek, pitched four shutout innings in relief with seven strikeouts as the Warriors came from behind to beat the host Wauwatosa East Red Raiders, 5-3, on June 15.
"Adam and Cole are both legitimate varsity starters," Schramek said. "It's exciting that they're only sophomores. Between those two and (senior) TJ (Kotnik), they have the bulk of the pitching responsibility on their shoulders. When those three are on, it seems like the other two facets of the game come together for us."
The Warriors began this week 9-5 overall and 4-4 in the Greater Metro Conference.
Eisenhower baseball
The Cudahy Packers put an end to the New Berlin Eisenhower Lions' run of perfection in a big way.
The host Packers had 16 hits in a 14-5 victory June 17, the Lions' first league loss in six games.
The New Berlin West Vikings piled on the hurt with a 13-4 win over host Eisenhower two days later.
"We were going to have some tough losses this season and these were two of them," said Eisenhower coach Scott Schimmel, whose team began this week 8-6 overall, including 5-2 in the Woodland Conference.
