New Berlin West boys basketball
The Vikings established themselves as one of the teams to beat in the Woodland Conference Blue Division with a pair of blowout victories.
Chad Mathwig had 26 points and Dustin Elias added 12 in a 53-37 home win over St. Francis on Friday. The Vikings jumped out to a 21-6 lead and never looked back.
Three days earlier, Mathwig's 21 and Jesse Riehle's 13 offset William Pelkofer's game-high 25 as New Berlin West defeated host Whitnall, 52-37.
As of Monday, the Vikings (4-1 overall, 4-0 conference) have allowed just 33.5 points per game in league play.
New Berlin Eisenhower boys basketball
Balance kept the Lions unbeaten entering this week.
Three players scored 10 or more points in Woodland Conference victories over visiting Greendale on Friday and at Wauwatosa West three days earlier.
In a 51-45 win over Greendale, Alex McRae and Mitch Sperka had 12 points each and Ryan Werner chipped in a season-high 10 off the bench as the Lions (4-0 overall, 3-0 conference) overcame an 18-point effort by Greendale's Jacob Merk.
At Wauwatosa West, four Lions scored 10 or more en route to a 72-64 victory.
Brian York, who did not score against Greendale, had a season-high 29 points including seven 3-pointers.
"Not everyone can throw in seven 3s in a game," Lions coach Dave Scheidegger said. "He's got a sweet shot. But he can also put it on the floor and dunk. He's a nice athlete.
Sperka had 14 points, McRae 11 and Keith Kahlfeldt 10.
Muskego girls basketball
The Warriors' stifling defense paved the way to a Southeast Conference season-opening victory over visiting Franklin on Friday.
Muskego held its guests to just 23 points through three quarters en route to a 60-44 win.
The Warriors' Katie Ellerson led all players with 18 points, Sarah Mlachnik had 16 and Rachel Neuberger chipped in 14 as Muskego improved to 2-1 overall, 1-0 SEC entering this week.
Franklin did not have a player with more than eight points.
New Berlin Eisenhower girls basketball
A pair of strong defensive efforts and the two-headed attack of Nicole Bauman and Anna Hahn kept the Lions among the area's undefeated teams entering this week.
A 13-4 run in the fourth quarter put the exclamation mark on Eisenhower's 54-40 win at Greendale on Friday.
The Lions held the Panthers to just six field goals. It was the fourth time in five games Eisenhower (5-0, 3-0) held an opponent to 42 points or less.
Bauman and Hahn had 16 points each and Megan Tkachuk added nine.
Hahn had 17 and Bauman 10 in a 50-39 win over visiting Wauwatosa West on Dec. 8.
Muskego co-op gymnastics
The Franklin Combined gymnastics team, which includes athletes from Muskego, won the seven-team Emerald Classic in Waterford on Saturday.
Last year's WIAA Division 1 runner-up, had at least three gymnasts finish in the top six in three events for a score of 139.775, well ahead of Burlington Combined's 135.775.
Franklin's Erin Honerlaw won the bars with a 9.0 and was fourth on beam with an 8.9. Sammie Olson was runner-up on bars (8.95), Melanie Pearson was second on beam (9.0), third on floor (9.2) and second all-around (34.8), Becky Schultz was third on beam (8.925), Shannon Hein placed second on the floor (9.225) and Lauren Zurowski was fourth on the floor (9.1).
The co-op opened the season with a 137-225-118-525 win at Waterford on Dec. 10. Olson won bars with a 9.025.
New Berlin West girls basketball
Disastrous fourth quarters nearly cost the Vikings a pair of league wins last week.
Host St. Francis outscored New Berlin West, 7-3, in the final quarter on Friday to pull out a 41-38 victory that dropped the Vikings to 3-2 overall, 3-1 conference as of Monday.
Hailey Kunz had a game-high 16 points and Toni Cruciani had nine, but it was not enough for the Vikings.
Three days earlier against visiting Whitnall, West suffered through another rocky fourth quarter, but this time was more fortunate and won, 38-35.
After taking a 29-7 halftime lead with a 10-1 second-quarter advantage, the Vikings were outscored, 28-9, in the second half, including, 15-3, in the fourth.
Muskego wrestling
The Warriors bounced back from a rough opening weekend to win the Hartford Team Tournament on Saturday.
Muskego went 5-0, including a 43-30 win over the host school, and improved to 9-3.
Eight Warriors went 5-0: Tyler Sinda (103 pounds), Justin Scherkenbach (119), Tyler Quartullo (135), Jordan Sowinski (145), Derek Olson (152), Jordan Lau (160), Jordan Gruettner (189) and Al Kehoe (215).
Two days earlier, the Warriors picked up three pins in the final three matches to come from behind and beat host Kenosha Tremper, 36-34, to remain undefeated in the Southeast Conference at 2-0.
Muskego swimming
The Warriors improved to 2-0 in the Southeast Conference with a 117-59 win over visiting Kenosha Tremper on Dec. 10.
Bobby Wolf, Brian Roberts and Patrick Walsh had their hands in four wins each. Wolf won the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 07.66 seconds), and the 500 freestyle (4:57.41) and was on the winning 200 medley relay (1:50.97) and 400 free relay (3:33.95).
Roberts was victorious in the 50 free (24.68) and 100 free (53.02), joined Wolf on the 400 free relay and was on the first-place 200 free relay (1:39.72).
Walsh won the 200 free (1:53.46) and 100 butterfly (59.17) and was on two winning relays.
Muskego boys basketball
Nick Romanowski's 18 points and 13 rebounds were too much for the Warriors to overcome in a 54-38 loss at Franklin on Friday.
Romanowski's teammate, Matt Krueger, chipped in 15 points as the Sabers dropped the Warriors to 0-5 overall as of Monday.
Muskego's Danny Frawley (12) and Jake Pope (11) combined for 23 points in a losing effort.
