New Berlin Eisenhower boys basketball

A pair of blowouts kept the Lions undefeated heading into this week, expected to be one of the toughest of the season for Eisenhower.

The Lions (19-0, 14-0) played host to Wauwatosa West (13-4) on Tuesday, after deadlines, and visit Whitnall (11-6) at 7:30 p.m. Friday. As of Monday, they needed one win to clinch the Woodland Conference Black Division outright.

Eisenhower kept its winning streak intact with a 72-50 road win at Greendale on Friday and a 70-50 home win over West Allis Hale on Feb. 10, a game that was originally scheduled to be played one day earlier at the Bradley Center but postponed due to inclement weather.

Senior Mitch Sperka had a big week with 40 combined points: game-highs of 22 against Greendale and 18 against Hale.

Zach Tranchita (13), Brian York (11) and Keith Kahlfeldt (10) also reached double digits in points against Greendale; Kahlfeldt (12) and Alex McRae (11) did so against Hale.

The Lions made a combined 16 3-pointers in the wins, including nine against Greendale.

Muskego swimming

Freshman Patrick Walsh and senior Bobby Wolf will lead a solid Muskego contingent to the state meet after surviving the ridiculously tough Waukesha South Sectional on Saturday.

Walsh and Wolf enter the Division 1 state meet, to be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium in Madison, as the eighth- and ninth-seeded swimmers in the 500-yard freestyle after taking sixth and seventh at the sectional in 4 minutes, 46.51 seconds and 4:46.89, respectively.

Wolf also qualified in the 200 free by taking ninth in 1:48.12 and he and Walsh teamed with juniors Ben Wierzba and Brian Roberts to qualify in the 400 free relay after taking eighth at the sectional in 3:22.99.

Roberts will also swim the 100 free at state after posting a seventh-place time of 49.35 at the sectional for the Warriors, who finished eighth of 11 teams with 153.5 points.

The winners of each event at the sectional automatically qualified for the state meet. Also qualifying were the next 18 best sectional finishes statewide in each event.

New Berlin wrestling

Zach Brucker's 40th win of the season locked up the only title for the New Berlin co-op at the Waukesha South Regional on Saturday.

Brucker's third win of the tournament was a 10-0 major decision over Waukesha North's John Brooks in the title match at 135 pounds. Brucker improved to 40-5 and, more importantly, advanced to the sectional.

In all, seven New Berlin wrestlers finished in the top four of their respective weight classes and advanced to the WIAA sectional at Oconomowoc at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The top two wrestlers in each weight class at the sectional will advance to the state meet.

Four of Brucker's teammates lost in the championship round and three of them were pinned: Hlu Vang (31-8) by Brookfield East's Casey Dentino at 103, Heng Vang (28-15) by Muskego's Justin Scherkenbach at 112, and Ross Riopelle (21-21) by Waukesha West's Tyler Semrad at 119.

Nick Binder (38-6) lost in the 171 finals, 14-4, to Muskego's Roland Dunlap.

Jonny Schmidt (11-18) was third at 130 and Zach Reuteler (26-19) fourth at 215 to also advance for New Berlin.

Muskego girls basketball

The Warriors survived a dangerous test to remain in first place in the Southeast Conference.

Katie Ellerson had a game-high 23 points and Alyssa Colla (15) and Sarah Mlachnik (14) combined for 29 as the Warriors upended visiting Kenosha Bradford, 56-48, on Friday.

The Red Devils rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to tie the game at 36-36 after three quarters, but the Warriors prevailed with a 20-12 fourth-quarter advantage.

Muskego improved to 14-3 overall, 10-1 conference, one game ahead of Racine Case. Those two teams play each other Feb. 26, but not before the Warriors visit Oak Creek (12-6) on Friday and host three-time defending state champion Milwaukee Vincent (16-1) on Feb. 23.

New Berlin West boys basketball

Another big week from Chad Mathwig and a balanced performance from his supporting cast kept the Vikings within a half game of Woodland Blue-leading Pewaukee.

Mathwig scored 25 points in a 63-41 blowout win over visiting Cudahy on Friday after dropping in 23 points in his team's 70-61 victory at Brown Deer on Feb. 10.

Cody Tomsak added 12 and Jesse Riehle nine against Cudahy. That same duo combined for 20 points against Brown Deer, where the Vikings survived a 27-point effort from Kierre Ogbanna.

West (16-6, 13-3) finishes the regular season by playing host to St. Thomas More at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

New Berlin West girls basketball

Hailey Kunz's 3-point barrage helped keep the Vikings hot and surpass their win total from a year ago.

Kunz scored all of her 12 points from behind the arc in West's 41-28 win at Cudahy on Friday.

After scoring just eight points in the first half, the Vikings outscored the Packers, 21-4, in the third quarter to take a 29-18 lead into the fourth.

The win bumped West past Cudahy into second place in the Blue Division.

Kunz nailed five 3s en route to a game-high 22 points as the Vikings beat host Brown Deer, 48-42, two days earlier.
