Eisenhower girls basketball
The Eisenhower girls went 2-0 without star guard Nicole Bauman, who is out with an ankle sprain, improving to 14-0, 12-0 on top of the Woodland Conference Black Division.
Ike began the week with another rout, beating the Falcons at Whitnall on Tuesday, 73-37, a 36-point victory. Then on Friday the defense held Wauwatosa West to eight points or less in each quarter and rolled to a 47-26 win at home, a 21-point win.
The Trojans stuck around for awhile, as Eisenhower led, 22-14, at half and 34-22 after three periods, but then put the game out of reach with a 13-4 fourth-quarter performance.
Katie Lang and Taylor McArthur scored 10 points each and Jenny Weiland had nine. Tosa West's Ashley Lindstrom was the game's high scorer with 12 points and Latasha Harmon had 11.
A 36-12 first half did in Whitnall to begin the week, as the only quarter the Falcons scored more than nine points was the third (16), but the Lions still led 58-28 going into the fourth period.
Weiland led the way with 20 points, Lang added 13 and Kristen Hesselbach had 11. Ashley Markowiak led Whitnall with 13 points.
Ike travels to Pewaukee on Feb. 4 to face the Blue Division-leading Pirates (10-1, 12-2 overall), and the Lions are hopeful that Bauman will be back. They play a non-conference game at Brookfield Central (8-6) on Feb. 7.
FMOW combo gymnastics
Inching closer to its ultimate goal of defending its WIAA state D1 championship, the local Franklin/Muskego/Oak Creek/Whitnall co-op turned in another season best and cut a little more off the deficit it's had all season against the Burlington co-op, when it finished second at the Madison Memorial Invite on Saturday.
"We had our highest score by about half-a-point," said coach Katie Moore, "and we got a bit closer (to Burlington). Anytime we can take them on right now is a good thing. We really want to get a good idea of where we're at and where we need to be."
The locals, who have a relatively quiet week, with dual meets at Mukwonago on Thursday and then at Westosha Central on Monday, turned in a score of 144.75 as Burlington won with a score of 145.925. It was the third time FMOW has lost to Burlington this season.
FMOW hung tough with Burlington on almost every event except balance beam, on which it was outscored by 0.8 of a point.
"And it's not like we did badly on beam, it's just that we have to clean up some execution things that could make our score much better," said Moore.
Top places for the locals included seconds by Lauren Zurowski (Whitnall) on vault (9.45) and in floor exercise (9.45). She was also third in the all-around (36.5). "And that was with a mistake on bars that probably cost her a half-point," said Moore.
Sammie Olson (Muskego) was fourth on bars with a 9.2 score while Jessica Kossoris (Franklin) on vault (9.05 with a new vault) and Shannon Hein (Muskego) in floor exercise (9.375), both took fifths.
Katlynn Benitez (Muskego) had a good meet, earning a fifth on bars and a sixth on beam.

New Berlin West defeated a good Slinger team (9-5), 53-45, on Jan. 24 in a non-conference game to improve to 12-4, the Vikings' seventh straight victory.
West blew the Owls away quickly by leading 30-14 at intermission. Slinger had a 31-23 advantage in the second half, but the Owls couldn't overcome their 16-point halftime deficit.
The familiar one-two of Dan Sidesky and Darin Sowinski combined for 28 points, led by Sidesky's 17 points. Sidesky had seven points in the first quarter sparking a 17-6 run.
The Vikings made 11-of-12 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off the Owls, as Sidesky was 4-for-4 and Sowinski was 3-for-3 in that span.
The Vikings, who had their Woodland Conference bye on Friday, got back into action on Tuesday against St. Francis 0-11, 0-14). They should go into back-to-back road games with South Milwaukee (8-3, 11-4) and St. Thomas More (9-2, 11-4) on Feb. 3 and Feb. 7 with a 10-3, 13-4 record barring an upset by the Mariners.

The Vikings (10-5) led 21-19 at halftime, but North went on a 15-3 run in the third period to take a 10-point (34-24) advantage into the final quarter.
Then it was the Vikings' turn to go on a run with a 15-6 spurt, but they fell short by one point.
Stephanie Turner had another big game with 19 points, but the next best performance was shared by Rebecca Gasper and Lizzie Kuhl with six points each.
West, which got back into Woodland Conference action on Tuesday at St. Francis (1-11, 3-13), should be 10-3 barring an upset against the Mariners when the Vikings host South Milwaukee (9-2, 9-3) on Feb. 3. The Rockets met Pewaukee (10-1, 12-2) on Tuesday at home.

Muskego girls basketball
Jessica Cattani tallied 16 points, Alyssa Colla 12 points and Shannon Riley eight points for the Warriors, but they still dropped a 60-59 double-overtime decision to Mukwonago in a non-conference game on Jan. 24.
That was the only action of last week for Muskego, which slipped to 9-5 on the season.
The Warriors (6-2 in the Southeast Conference entering this week) visit Racine Park (2-6, 4-8) at 7:15 p.m. on Feb. 3. They then face a key game when they welcome Franklin (6-2, 9-4) at 7:15 p.m. on Feb. 7. Muskego and Franklin came into this week tied for second place in the SEC, two games behind Racine Case (8-0).

New Berlin wrestling
The New Berlin co-op lost to first-place Pewaukee on Jan. 25, 57-10, in the only action this week.
"We forfeited quite a few weights to get our wrestlers some better matches on JV," coach Nick Patenaude said. "Of the matches we did wrestle I was pleased with the effort and way the matches went.
"I thought we were consistently attacking and pushing the pace. It would have been very nice to pick up one or both of the OT matches, but now we know what we need to do between now and the conference tournament."
New Berlin's winners were decisions by Ross Riopelle at 132 pounds (2-0) and Isaac Supernadt at 285 (5-0) and Alex Rodriguez with a major decision (12-4).
