The Lions had several team award winners voted on by the players.

Leading the way was senior Aaron Wilson as the Player of the Year, the Lions' top scorer.

Senior Ryan Hansmann was the Most Improved Player; Mikey Perez was the Defender of the Year; senior Jimmy Kuhnz was Rookie of the Year.

Senior Corbin Messman won the Team Award, which is given to the player who puts the team first.

In intrasquad competition the Champion's League Winner was sophomore Tyler Holdentunder.

Three players earned All-Woodland Conference mention - Wilson and Perez were named second-team all-conference and Messman was honorable mention.

The Lions were 10-13-1 overall with a conference mark of 8-5, a good mark when you consider they started with five straight losses.

"It was a testimony to the resiliency of this team that they continued on and saw that we were on the right track," coach Gary Troy said. "(They) put themselves in a position to have a successful season.

"Once the conference season started we were well-prepared and competitive in every game."

Messman helped steady the midfield and Stephen Evans switched positions and the latter ended up leading the team in assists.

Troy will lose 11 seniors - captains Evans, Messman and Jaskulsi, as well as Hansmann, Kuhnz, Messman, Wilson, Ben Daines, Jake Thompson, Noah Wagner and Benny Xing.

"The team bonded well and enjoyed thei season," Troy said. "Many of the seniors felt that this was one of their most enjoyable team because of the camaraderie that developed. This was a true team in the manner of style in which they played."

Troy is expecting a solid season with a talented group of returnees and successful JV and freshman programs.

Coach Chris Viste announced the New Berlin West award winners and Nicci Poellinger earned top honors.

Poellinger, No. 4 singles, compiled a record of 15-5 and earned the team's Most Valuable Player Award.

Other winners were the Most Improved Player, Alex Weis, No. 3 singles, and the Viking Spirit Award went to Kim Kramer, No. 1 doubles. The All-Conference Academic Award winner was Lora Daskalska

Team captains were Kramer and Daskalska, No. 2 singles.

West will lose eight seniors: Daskalska, Sylvia Autio (No. 3 doubles), Abbie Bottom (JV), Brittany Buechs (No. 3 doubles), Veronica Karolek (half season No. 3 doubles/second half JV), Sarah Kunath (JV), Maddie Maag (No. 2 doubles) and Jaci Tierney (JV).

The Vikings had an overall record of 5-11 with a conference record of 1-5, good enough for 11th place.

"The season was enjoyable because the team is a great group of girls to work with," coach Viste said. "They worked hard, had a positive attitude and wanted to improve.

Viste then talked about the conference realignment.

"The season was a challenge with the new division alignments, though, in the Woodland Conference, as our West Division contained many talented teams," she said. "I'm looking forward to our young girls continuing to play during the off-season and continuing to improve and be more competitive against the tougher schools."

The New Berlin United were swept by Racine Horlick in the WIAA Sectional semifinals at Horlick.

The Rebels won 25-21, 25-18 and 25-18 to end the United's season. John Collins had eight kills and Mickey Sugar had 23 assists

Their overall record was 6-8, but they were 4-1 in Woodland Conference play.

Here is a look at the New Berlin West girls volleyball team and the award winners for the past season.

The 4-Star Award (four-year varsity starters) went to Casey Luehrs and Kellie Shaw and Gina Pezze won the Team MVP Award.

The Vikings will lose four seniors - Luehrs and Shaw along with Carly Hubert (three-year varsity starter) and Rachel Gasper (two-year varsity starter).

West had several postseason awards, including several conference honors.

Pezze and Shaw earned first-team All-Woodland West Division and Luehrs and Luehrs and Sarah Franzen were second team. Pezze and Shaw earned first and second team, respectively, All-Woodland Conference (East/West divisions combined).

Coach Joel Golstyn's club finished with an overall record of 32-8 and a 3-2 division record, good enough for third place, and a 7-2 conference mark. They finished third in the conference tournament.

"This team received much recognition from opposing coaches and deservedly so," he said. "We concluded our season with a tough loss at Catholic Memorial in the regional final."

The Vikings were always ranked in the Top 10 of the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association D2 rankings and finished the year ranked No. 4 in the D2 state rankings.

"This was the most talented team I have had in my four years at West," Golstyn said. "Our record of 30 plus wins was also a high point. More importantly, this year we had more 'signature' wins against top teams in the area (Germantown, Mukwonago, Nicolet, Watertown). These are all highly-ranked at the D1 level."

West won two (West Allis Central/New Berlin West) of the four tournaments they entered and finished second in the other two.

The Vikings lost their only setter, Sarah Franzen (ankle sprain) before the first tournament. But Golstyn shuffled around his lineups in her absence and continued to win most matches because of the solid play from the entire team.

"Through those changes we grew as a team and adjusted well to injuries that we sustained later in the season," he said. "This allowed us to compete throughout the season at such a high level."
