Vikings beat Pewaukee, Greenfield

Moving up in the Blue Division

Jan. 9, 2012 | 0 comments

New Berlin - New Berlin West opened the week with a huge win over Pewaukee (5-2, 6-4) on Jan. 3 and then crushed Greenfield (0-7, 0-9) on Friday to close out the week.

The Vikings outscored Pewaukee in the fourth quarter, 18-11, accounting for the difference in a 48-45 win in Woodland Conference boys' basketball action at West on Jan. 3.

The Vikings limited the Pirates to shooting 29 percent from the field (17 for 58) in a turnover-heavy contest for both sides, but West trailed at intermission, 21-16, thanks to a 9-4 second-period disadvantage.

The Vikings still trailed, 34-30, going into the fourth period, but they went on to build their biggest lead of the night, taking a 44-37 lead with 2 minutes, 40 seconds to play.

However, Austin Hansen's 3-point play, John Czerwinski's 23-foot basket and Jordan Edgerson's rebound bucket with 14.8 seconds left gave the Pirates a chance.

But West, which missed two front-end bonus free throws down the stretch, picked up two more points from Jordan McKeon at the free-throw line with under 10 seconds to go, and a final 3-pointer by Pewaukee was off the mark.

With Dan Sidesky held to seven points, Matt Rink stepped up with 11, nine coming on three 3-pointers. Dino Poulos and Austin Fritz were next with nine points apiece. Hansen's 15 points led Pewaukee.

"That first quarter was ugly basketball," West coach Jeff Lewiston said. "We couldn't catch, couldn't dribble, couldn't finish. But we put some three-quarter pressure on and that surprised them."

Greenfield game

The Vikings got off to a good start - leading 31-17 at halftime - and then put the game away in third period to win going away, 64-35, Friday in their second home game of the week.

West had their most productive quarter, scoring 22 points, in the third period and went into the final quarter with a 53-26 advantage.

Sidesky had 19 points, including three 3-pointers, while Darin Sowinski had 10.

Fritz, a 6-foot-6 inch junior, coming off two knee surgeries, is slowly coming around and added 12 points. He has not played basketball since his freshman year.

The Vikings (5-3, 7-4) traveled to Shorewood (3-4, 6-4) on Tuesday and will now host Cudahy (0-7, 2-8) on Friday and travel to St. Francis (0-8, 0-10) on Tuesday.

"Our mantra is we're not pretty," Lewiston said. "We have a blue collar ethic. We hang in there, hang in there and then when they a mistake, we step through the door. We're getting better."
