United Way Connects the Community to Volunteer Opportunities

(November 20, 2012) – Waukesha, WI – United Way in Waukesha County would like to invite volunteers to the following opportunities:

Christmas Office Opportunity, Christmas Clearing Council, Waukesha
Christmas Clearing Council of Waukesha Country works to provide Christmas to children in need in our community. We fill our files in the fall with the names children whose families are struggling and who have been qualified by agencies and schools. We then match them with sponsors (individuals, businesses, clubs, and organizations) who commit to spending a minimum of $60.00 on items on the child's wish list. Our offices are open seasonally from mid-October - mid-December. We staff three volunteers from 9:00-12:00 and three from 12:00-3:00 five days a week for the 9 week season. Volunteers answer phone calls from people who wish to help others for Christmas, match them with the families in need, write up the matches, help with mailings, filing and other office duties. Requirements: Volunteers must be a minimum age of 18 years and older. We will train you at the CCC offices on the various projects.

Child Care, Parents Place, Waukesha
Have fun playing with children! We are looking for volunteers at Parents Place in Waukesha to watch the children of parents attending parenting classes or support groups in the same building. Volunteers are needed in the evening during parenting classes being held on Monday thru Thursday between 5:30-8:00pm. A commitment of 2 weeks or more, one night a week or more, is requested. Requirements: Volunteers must be a minimum of 16 years old. On sight training is provided. The agency will do background and reference checks on all volunteers.

Mentors Needed at Area Schools, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Waukesha
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee is seeking adult volunteers to mentor elementary-aged children in structured school settings in the City of Waukesha. Male and female mentors, aged 18 and older are in need. In this school-based program, volunteers (Bigs) who have been matched with a child (Little) meet weekly for a minimum of one hour either during the school day or after school. Together, the volunteer mentor and the child concentrate on academic achievement, recreational activities and emotional development. “Bigs” and “Littles” are matched together based on similar interests and values. Each site’s staff coordinator provides adult oversight, planned activities, direct match support and outcome measurement. All volunteers must go through a thorough screening process which includes a formal application, layered criminal background screening, references checks and an in-person interview. We ask for a minimum two-year relationship and the availability to meet with the child on a weekly basis. For our school-based program, all volunteers must be 18 years or older and out of high school.

Pianist, The Caring Place, Inc., Waukesha
Come and delight the guests of our adult day program by sharing your talents on the piano! You are needed to play for an "Elder Sing-a-Long"; activity staff will provide assistance. Volunteers are welcome Monday through Friday between 10:45-11:30am or 2:15-3:00pm. Requirements: Volunteers must be a minimum of 18 years old unless accompanied by an adult and able to commit to coming once a month.
