Important Info For Sewage Victims

A recent news article in the MuskegoNOW incorrectly states that the City of Muskego no longer has insurance coverage for residents who suffered losses due to sewage backups in last week's storm.

In fact, according to a representative of the City's insurer, the League of Wisconsin Municipaltlities Mutual Insurance, there may be coverage. In order to pursue the City's insurance, EACH INDVIDUAL HOUSEHOLD affected by the sewage backups must file an individual claim for losses directly to the Clerk of the City of Muskego.

From there, the Clerk contacts the claims admninistrator of the insurance company to notify them of the claim. As of noon on Wedneday, the City's insurance company had not been notified of any pending claims, but were advised to expect claims to start coming through offiicial channels now that the proceedure is known.

On a related matter, homeowners are still encouraged to contact thier own personal insurers. While the personal claims will probably be denied, those denials will be needed in order to file FEMA claims if and when Waukesha County is declared a 'federal disaster area'.

Finally, people should be cautious in thier use of area lakes due to the very high probablity of contamination of local waterways from the sewage which escaped during the storm event. The sewer line break on Lannon Drive was less than 150 feet from Little Muskego Lake. There have also been reports that the City released thousands of gallons of untreated sewage directly into Little Muskego Lake while trying to control flooding. This contaminated water flows from Little Muskego to Bass's Bay, Big Muskego and Wind Lakes prior to entering the Fox River.
